Joint security forces in Abim District have recovered 45 head of cattle following a night raid allegedly carried out by suspected armed Karamojong warriors on Christmas Day. According to the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, Michael Longole, the operation was launched after security received intelligence that the cattle had been raided from Magamaga Sub-county in Abim District.
Longole said a rapid operation mounted by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) led to the recovery of the animals at around 10:00 p.m. in Kanyalaka South Village, Wilela Parish, Magamaga Sub-county. He added that since the start of the festive season, security agencies in the Karamoja Sub-region have remained on high alert to ensure peaceful and safe celebrations.
Longole noted that security personnel have intensified patrols and surveillance in grazing areas and along major highways to prevent livestock theft, which remains a key security concern in the region. He urged members of the public to share information promptly on any suspected security threats and to take measures to secure their property.
The Abim Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Gilbert Okwi, attributed the successful recovery to community vigilance and the readiness of the joint security forces to protect the lives and property of wananchi.
Okwi said the suspects escaped after an exchange of gunfire with the security forces.
