Security authorities in Kaberamaido District have formally cleared the campaign trail of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, following a comprehensive security assessment by the District Security Committee, signalling a cautious opening of political space ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The assessment covered two designated campaign venues, Kaberamaido Township Primary School in Kaberamaido Town Council and Kagga Primary School in Ochero Sub-County, both earmarked to host Kyagulanyi’s campaign engagements.

Security officials confirmed that the sites meet the minimum safety and public order requirements under the Public Order Management framework, and declared him to host the NUP Candidate on Friday, as he continues his campaigns in the Teso sub-region/

The clearance comes against the backdrop of heightened political tension and increased scrutiny of opposition activities, particularly NUP rallies, which in recent months have been marred by confrontations between law enforcement and supporters of Kyagulanyi.

In neighbouring Soroti City, police previously deployed tear gas to disperse crowds accompanying the opposition leader, citing concerns over public safety and crowd control.

Addressing the media after the assessment, Kaberamaido Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Godfrey Nyakahuma, who chairs the District Security Committee, said the exercise was aimed at safeguarding lives and property while ensuring lawful political engagement.

“We conducted a thorough evaluation of the proposed venues to ensure they meet the required safety standards. As long as political activities are conducted within the law, they are permitted,” Nyakahuma said.

District Police Commander SP Peter Akampurira assured residents that security forces have put in place all the necessary measures to maintain calm before, during, and after the campaign meetings. “We have made the necessary deployments to ensure the safety of the public, political leaders, and property throughout the meetings,” Akampurira said.

The clearance was welcomed by Irene Amayo Anyobu, the NUP flag bearer for Woman Member of Parliament in Kaberamaido District, who called on party supporters to cooperate with security personnel.

“We urge our supporters to remain peaceful and comply with guidance from security officers throughout the visit. A calm environment is essential for a meaningful campaign,” Anyobu said. With the approval in place, Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, is now set to proceed with his campaign activities in Kaberamaido, where he is expected to address supporters on governance, the economy, service delivery, and regional development concerns affecting the Teso sub-region.

The Kaberamaido stop forms part of Kyagulanyi’s broader push to consolidate opposition support across eastern Uganda as he positions himself against long-serving President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has been in power for nearly four decades.

Confirming the campaign itinerary, Kyagulanyi said his team would also move to neighbouring Kalaki District, calling on security agencies to act professionally.

“We shall head to Kaberamaido and Kalaki for our next campaign activities, and I urge security to observe the law as we mobilise support for a new Uganda,” Kyagulanyi said. Security forces have since heightened their presence across Teso districts in anticipation of Kyagulanyi’s visit, as authorities brace for large crowds and seek to avert any incidents that could escalate political tensions in the run-up to the polls.
