His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala, is expected to preside over the burial of the late Rev. Fr. Simon Peter Ssessanga, the long-serving Secretary General of the Luwero–Nakasongola–Nakaseke Joint Christian Council (LUNANA J.C.C).

Archbishop Ssemogerere confirmed he would join the burial ceremony scheduled for 1:00 p.m. today. Fr. Ssessanga will be laid to rest in the priestly cemetery at Katikamu Parish.

During his 13-year tenure as the second bishop of Kasana–Luweero Diocese, Archbishop Ssemogerere witnessed Fr. Ssessanga’s tireless service to LUNANA and the wider Christian fraternity—service that has left an enduring legacy of unity.

Fr. Ssessanga passed away on Monday morning at Bishop Ceaser Asili Memorial Hospital in Kasana–Luweero Town Council, where he had been receiving treatment following weeks of illness.

He was 72 years old, born on July 10, 1953. At the time of his death, he served as a priest at St. Joseph the Worker Katikamu Parish.

Ordained on August 26, 1979, at Lubaga Cathedral, Fr. Ssessanga had recently celebrated 46 years of dedicated priestly ministry—a period marked by pastoral devotion, leadership, and a strong commitment to unity among Christian denominations.

In a statement issued by the Kasana–Luweero Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Emmanuel Ssekyanzi Lyevuze, on behalf of Rt. Rev.

Lawrence Mukasa, the Ordinary of Kasana–Luweero Diocese, the bishop described the news of Fr. Ssessanga’s death as “profoundly sorrowful,” adding, “May the soul of our departed brother priest rest in eternal peace.” Fr. Ssessanga is widely remembered for his steadfast work in promoting ecumenism across the region.

He played a pivotal role in organizing the Joint Ecumenical Public Way of the Cross, a Good Friday tradition that brought together Catholics of the Kasana–Luweero Diocese, Anglicans of Luweero Diocese, and the Orthodox Church.

Introduced during the tenure of the late Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, the initiative flourished under Fr. Ssessanga’s coordination, becoming a powerful symbol of Christian unity and collective witness.

Addressing mourners after a requiem Mass on Monday evening at Katikamu Parish, Bishop Lawrence Mukasa first extended condolences to Fr. Ssessanga’s close classmates, including Fr. Joseph Mary Ssekalegga, the Diocesan Education Secretary, and Fr. Matthias Ssennyange, Chaplain of the Diocesan Family Apostolate.

He further revealed that in his communication with Archbishop Ssemogerere, the Archbishop had expressed deep sorrow, noting that he had journeyed through many years of ministry alongside the late priest. Archbishop Ssemogerere confirmed he would join the burial ceremony scheduled for 1:00 p.m. today.
