UPC, FDC Lango Elders Accuse Akena of Misleading Supporters

A group of elders from the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party have accused UPC’s Jimmy James Michael Akena of misleading party supporters.

The group comprising of UPC’s Former Regional Vice for Northern Uganda Chris Ongom, LCV chairpersons under UPC ticket like Geoffrey Alex Ogwal, FDC’s Bryan Ogutu, former party flag bearers, mobilizers, and senior elders have formed an alliance referred to as UPC and FDC Elders and Leaders Group.

They are responding to a call which Akena recently made to all his supporters and party members not to vote for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Reading from resolutions passed on the 13th of this month, Ogwal said UPC currently having no presidential candidate gives them the right not to follow Akena’s call.

“Because of the above, we resolve as follows; one, to strongly disassociate ourselves as UPC, FDC members, leaders and elders from Lango sub-region from the public pronouncement made by Honorable Jimmy Akena.”

He declared “unwavering” support for President Museveni.

This move he said, is meant to bring resources to Lango. “If we are part of government, we are near resources and we are dying for resources for the people of Lango.”

He added: “The past should tell us what happened previously and some years back. We are appealing to all people in Lagos to support President Museveni for purposes of resources that we need to come to Lango.”

However, Chris Ongom explains that their decision stops at mobilizing votes for President Museveni not his party flag bearers or joining his NRM party.

He further explained that since his UPC party is in no position to come up with a position, its upon the supporters to decide on what they want.

“It’s about UPC fielding a presidential candidate, and anybody who would have been fielded, we would have given our support but because of our internal challenges which we are not ready to delve into now, we need to take a direction because the election is at the door.”

Ogutu on the other hand said it is important to join the force which you cannot fight in order for you to benefit.

Last week while launching his party’s Manifesto, Akena rallied all his supporters not to give their votes to President Museveni. He accused the president of sabotaging his presidential ambition.
