Finally, DP’s Mao Explains Why He is Campaigning for NRM’s Museveni

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Nobert Mao has asked the Acholi to vote for Museveni in the forthcoming general elections.

Speaking as a chief guest during the 13th memorial event of Tiberio Okeny Atwoma at Orayng Ojuma ‘A’ South Village in Labongo Amida Sub County in Kitgum district on Sunday, Mao explained that his party stopped him from standing for president.

In September 2025, Norbert Mao, President-General of the Democratic Party -DP, publicly declared that he will support President Yoweri Museveni in the 2026 presidential election.

Mao also confirmed that DP will not field a presidential candidate in 2026 because of political strategy and the cooperation treaty between DP and the ruling NRM party that has been in place since 2022.

According to Mao, President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled the country for 39 years, still has “debts” to pay the Acholi, so he should not be voted out yet.

Mao, who was mainly speaking in parables and political allegories, revealed that he became the DP president by being close to the “drummer” and implying that he could be the next president of Uganda.

“Acholi, listen to me. You are the ones who lifted me. I see further than you. I see how the clouds are changing. Let our debtor go back to lead. We shall surround him and be scrutinizing. You never know. That is what I did to become DP president… by dancing close to the drummer, while hoping that his hands would eventually get tired. I am now revealing the bedroom secrets in parables. So those who understand, well and good.”

As a rebuttal to those who say president Museveni has led for long, Mao said this is the time to vote back leaders who have stayed in power, have the experience, advising them against “tying ox ploughs on goats, because they cannot pull it.”

Mao further reasoned that even though Museveni has ruled from years, it is easier to wait for a change of government than fight, because his time is naturally running out.

“The big man’s [Museveni’s] day is like this evening which is full of tall shadows and dim light. Forget about the issue that he has led for years. In fact, this election is for those who have overstayed in power. This is the time for seasoned hunters, not scavengers of edible rats behind homesteads. We should vote real hunters who can identify wild animals by their droppings and footprints, not hunters who slip on a wild animal’s faeces and asks what it is.”

Mao also hinted on his ambition of becoming the next president of the country, saying he climbed the political ladder effortlessly, and is one step to becoming a president.

“I’m among those who harvested honey without fire, and nothing stop me from sitting on the big chair. I do not want to reveal much because there are tables where such issues are discussed.

There are issues that are discussed in the bedroom, around the bonfire, and those that are discussed in the marketplace. Most of the issues in my heart are still being discussed in the bedroom. But as Acholi we should know that all tribes are fielding strong candidates, because the future of Uganda will be discussed in the next term. So don’t vote weak people.”
