Residents of Katakwi are concerned over delays and accidents arising from the poor state of roads which has been aggravated by floods in the district that.
The current heavy rains have destroyed a number of roads, bridges, crops and people’s houses leaving hundreds of households stranded.
Jorem Obelamo and Samuel Ouga, residents of Katakwi cried out to the district authorities and ministry of works and transport to work on the flooded and impassable roads as trade and access of social services from the sub county headquarters to district are affected. Among the roads affected are Toroma -Usuk to Ongongonja , Ngaram corner to Ngariam sub county headquarters, Kapujan via Toroma to Magoro among others.
In Ngariam sub county, Moses Iteit LC III chairperson says Floods caused by torrential rains have caused havoc in Ngariam Sub County with about 500 crop gardens of sweet potatoes, groundnuts, cassava among others have been affected and over 200 houses destroyed with about 2000 affected people seeking refuge in trading centers out of approximate population of 10,000 people of Ngariam.
The most affected parish are Kaikamosing , Adipala, Osobut , Acanga , Oseep and oedepus in Ngariam sub county. Iteit says with current disaster, he is anticipating the area will experience food shortage in the near future hence call for emergency fund allocated for prone areas to facilitate.
Geoffrey Omolo, LCV chairperson Katakwi District also decried the need for intervention on the central roads to be worked while the district will work hard on 1 billion road funds. He says Katakwi is disaster prone district that ministry of disaster and preparedness need to allocate.
Attempts to get a comment from the central authorities were futile at the time of filing this report.
