Leaders from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in the Tooro sub-region have formed a joint alliance to mobilize support for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s re-election in the 2026 general elections.

The alliance was officially unveiled during a press conference held on Sunday at Nyaika Hotel in Fort Portal City. Henry Mutageki Basaliza, the PLU Coordinator for Tooro sub-region, said the partnership between PLU and NRM seeks to consolidate grassroots support for President Museveni.

He described the alliance as a patriotic partnership aimed at ensuring that the President’s legacy of peace and transformation continues through the ballot in 2026. Basaliza added that PLU — which has attracted significant youth support since its formation — brings renewed energy to the ruling party’s mobilization efforts, particularly among first-time voters inspired by the movement’s ideals of self-reliance, discipline, and Pan-Africanism.

Claire Dorcus Kobugabe, the NRM Chairperson for Fort Portal City, said the collaboration between PLU and NRM sends a strong message of unity and continuity. She described it as a timely and strategic alliance that will strengthen their mobilization ahead of the elections.

Hussein Kato, the Bunyangabu District NRM Chairperson, emphasized that the overwhelming support for President Museveni should now be used as a tool for meaningful negotiation. “In 2026, we are targeting over 90% of the vote. But this time, our support should be a bargaining tool. Let’s ensure Tooro gets its fair share in roads, education, health, and enterprise funding,” he said.

Kato urged party leaders to speak with one voice when engaging the central government, warning that without a clear development agenda, the region risks being left behind. The event was attended by NRM and PLU leaders from the districts of Kabarole, Bundibugyo, Bunyangabu, Kamwenge, Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo, Kitagwenda, and Fort Portal City.
