The Moroto District Security Committee has launched investigations into reports that science teachers in the district have joined the ongoing strike by arts teachers over salary disparities. The strike, spearheaded by arts teachers, seeks equal pay with science counterparts, whom they accuse the government of favoring with higher salaries.
Last week, a team of district education officials and security committee members, led by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), inspected several secondary schools, including Rupa Seed SS, Moroto High School, Nadunget Seed SS, Moroto Parents SS, and Katikekile Seed SS.
They reported finding no science teachers in class. Assistant RDC Mark Aol Musoka condemned the development, describing it as an injustice to the community. He said investigations have been launched to establish why teachers were absent.
Musoka warned that any science teacher found to have joined the strike will face disciplinary action, including denial of salaries. He instructed the Chief Administrative Officer and the town clerk to withhold payment for teachers who fail to resume work immediately.
District Education Officer Moses Lokwii said they were shocked by reports that science teachers had joined the strike without clear reasons. He confirmed that during an inspection at Rupa Seed SS in the first week of term, no teacher was found in class.
Despite these claims, some head teachers have dismissed the allegations. Eric Sabila, head teacher of Moroto High School, refuted reports that science teachers had joined the strike, insisting lessons were ongoing without disruption.
Sabila explained that the only interruption was a meeting with UNEB officials involving head teachers from Amudat, Napak, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit, and Moroto districts in preparation for the upcoming national exams in November.
