The National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U) has launched the construction of a National Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) transmission station in Kitgum District. The initiative is part of a UGX 186 billion project under the Ministry of Information, Communication Technology (ICT) and National Guidance to expand digital connectivity in 56 districts across Uganda.

The NBI project seeks to provide high-speed internet connectivity nationwide, bridging the digital divide and improving communication among government agencies, businesses, and citizens. Officials say the infrastructure will drive socio-economic development by enabling better access to healthcare, education, and financial services.

According to Ronald Kato, Senior Transport Network Engineer at NITA-U, the Kitgum transmission station will boost signal strength and improve network quality in Kitgum and neighbouring districts of East Acholi, as well as parts of the Karamoja sub-region. He said the project will also help reduce internet costs in the region. Kato explained that the construction will be carried out by the China International Telecommunication Company Corporation (CITCC). Kitgum District Chairperson Arwai Christopher Obol welcomed the project, saying it addresses persistent network challenges, especially at the district headquarters.

He noted that stronger network services will improve payment systems and enhance communication between government agencies and citizens. The transmission station is part of Phase 5 of the NBI project, supported through a concessional loan from the Government of China, aimed at extending connectivity to previously underserved regions of the country.
