Sophan Mutahunga alias Muta, the director of Muta Kitchenware in Kabale town, has been remanded on charges of murder and remanded.

Mutahunga, alongside his private security guards, Lauben Byamugisha and Emmanuel Byamukama, were arrested for allegedly assaulting to death Berdan Niwamanya, a resident of Murambo 1 village, Rubanda district, on Friday.

It is alleged that while opposite the Manhattan Hotel in Kigongi street along Kabale-Mbarara Highway, Mutahunga, Byamugisha, Byamukama and others, still at large, accused Niwamanya of theft. Niwamanya was beaten and dragged to another street of Kigongi, opposite the Tik Tok bar and killed.

Mutahunga Byamukama and Byamugisha put the body into Mutahunga’s Toyota Harrier Motor vehicle registration number UBC 505D, drove it to Makanga Hill in Makanga village and dumped it there.

The three were arrested near the Posta Uganda Building in Kabale town, driving the same vehicle as they tried to escape towards Kisoro.

On Wednesday, the deceased’s relatives, led by his wife Doreen Akampurira, stormed the office of Kabale Resident District Commissioner demanding an explanation as to why Mutahunga and his guards have not yet been paraded before court.
