A stepmother in Kitgum District has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her 7-year-old stepson, whose body was found near the family’s tethered bulls. The suspect, Pauline Oyella, a resident of Bongolakur Village in Labongo Akwang Sub-county, is being held at Kitgum Central Police Station.

According to Richard Ocitti, the Local Council One Chairperson of Bongolakur Village, the victim, Brian Oyo, a Primary One pupil at Alune Primary School, had been left in Oyella’s care while his mother, Sunday Aciro, went to the trading centre.

“When Aciro returned home, she searched for her son in vain throughout the night, only to find his lifeless body the following morning near where the family’s bulls were tethered,” Ocitti explained. He revealed that Oyella and Aciro had a history of disputes, many of which had been brought before him for mediation.

“This has led to speculation that Oyella’s actions may have been motivated by the ongoing feud,” he added. Kitgum District Police Commander (DPC) Peter Oyesigye confirmed the arrest and said Oyella is facing preliminary charges of murder.

“We are taking this case very seriously, and we will ensure that justice is served,” Oyesigye said. He noted that police are still gathering evidence and working to establish Oyella’s motive and the exact circumstances of the crime. “The police are working to gather evidence and piece together the circumstances surrounding Brian’s death. Oyella’s motive and the exact circumstances of the crime are still under investigation,” he said.
