The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, has warned police commanders against working in isolation. Byakagaba, who is making tours to various policing divisions in Kampala, has warned that any police commander, including juniors who choose to work in isolation, is bound to fail.
According to Byakagaba, it is important for every police officer to embrace teamwork, and this will simplify their services to Ugandans. “Do not work in isolation. Work as a team. This will help you to effectively fulfil your responsibilities,” IGP Byakagaba told Kajjansi policing division commanders and their subordinates.
The IGP in his tours is being accompanied by Assistant Inspector General of Police –AIGP Moses Byaruhanga, Director of police health services, AIGP Hadijah Namutebi, Director of Welfare, Production and Sports, AIGP Ubaldo Bamunoba, the Chief Political Commissariat, and KMP Police Commander Richard Echega.
Byakagaba, who has also visited the Entebbe policing division, reiterated the crucial role of law enforcement in the realisation of the government’s vision (Vision 2040), the implementation of government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), and the socio-economic transformation of our nation.
He further pledged to prioritise welfare in a bid to address the key workforce needs. At his Entebbe and Kajjansi visit, the IGP met the spouses of the officers and promised to provide them with the necessary support that would enable them to lead a decent life.
Namutebi, who is the welfare chief, informed the IGP of the critical housing conditions of police officers at most of the policing divisions. In response, IGP urged for the proper utilisation of resources and also pledged to help improve the welfare.
“I urge you to properly use the limited resources availed to you. Ensure proper accountability, proper command and control as well as prioritise your safety. Have good relations with the community and other government agencies,” IGP Byakagaba said.
Byaruhanga and Bamunoba also emphasized the health of personnel, community policing, and the sub-county policing model. Police commanders have been urged to always be mindful of their health as well as that of their subordinates.
Byakagaba also warned all police officers against acts of bribery and corruption. According to Byakagaba, any officers who engage in acts of corruption will be dismissed from the force and eventually prosecuted in courts of law.
“We should all condemn corruption, and I urge you to refrain from engaging in such activities. Be satisfied with what you earn and prioritise service delivery. Corruption will ruin your career,” IGP Byakagaba said.
