Pupils at Amwa Demonstration Primary School in Oyanm District, Sebino Primary School, are stranded after a severe storm last month. The storm destroyed five classrooms, affecting 530 learners.
The storm blew off roofs and destroyed textbooks and teaching aids. Currently, the school has an enrollment of 1,756 pupils.
The Head Teacher, Harriet Jenet Achola, says that they are unable to improvise structures where the pupils can study. She adds that no relief aid has been delivered by the government or humanitarian agencies despite the urgency of the situation.
Achola notes that Primary Three and Four lessons have been disrupted, besides exposing the learners to harsh weather, especially when it rains.
The school PTA Chairperson, Walter Auuku, resolved that each parent would contribute 5,000 shillings to help renovate the damaged classrooms, while they await external support.
Robert Odongo, a parent of Amwa Demonstration Primary School, urged parents to raise funds to renovate the classroom blocks.
The LCV Chairperson, Benson Dila, said that reports have been compiled and submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office, the district disaster committee and the Ministry of Disaster in Kampala-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
