The Ministry of Health is to deploy more than 150 medical personnel to provide emergency care to pilgrims attending the Namugongo Martyrs’ Day celebrations.
Dr. Joseph Oum from the Ministry of Health’s emergency health services revealed this during a joint safety preparation training of medical teams from UPDF, UPF, Uganda Red Cross, and the Ministry of Health at the Namugongo Catholic Shrines.
Dr. Oum stated that medical workers from UPDF, UPF, Uganda Red Cross, and Ministry of Health will work together, and will be stationed at both Catholic and Anglican Shrines, to handle emergencies and save lives during the Martyrs’ Day celebrations.
Dr. Oum added that apart from the medical drills, ambulance drivers are also undergoing training on emergency response. He mentioned that facilities near Genina, Kira, and Mulago National Referral Hospital are prepared, alongside medical camps that will be set up inside the two shrines.
According to the Ministry, more than 45 ambulances will be stationed inside and outside the two shrines to handle possible emergencies.
The fire Emergency Rescue Services teams also conducted exercise preparations on handling fire emergencies during the Martyrs’ celebrations, following the medical emergencies preparations.
The annual Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations slated for 3rd June are expected to draw huge crowds from Uganda and worldwide, posing significant challenges for security agencies to maintain peace and for medical services to attend to potential cases of illness or injury among pilgrims-URN.
