Madi West Nile Diocese has started screening all the foot pilgrims taking the ‘Walk of Faith’ to Namugongo for this year’s Martyrs Day celebrations. This year’s Anglican Martyrs Day celebrations are being organised by the Northern Uganda cluster dioceses of Kitgum, Northern Uganda, Lango, West Lango, Nebbi and Madi West Nile under the theme: Imitating God’s goodness by doing good.
Over 50 pilgrims in the age bracket of 30 to 80 turned up at the diocesan headquarters in Mvara on Wednesday to undertake the screening exercise, which is being conducted by a team of Red Cross and Diocesan health officials.
Among key health conditions being checked are: blood pressure, diabetes, chronic coughs, malaria, and other chronic diseases.
While addressing the foot pilgrims at the diocesan headquarters in the local dialect, Godfrey Nasa, the Diocesan Secretary, applauded the Pilgrims for choosing to walk the journey of faith and encouraged them to remain faithful, committed and dedicated for a successful pilgrimage.
Esther Idialongo, the Diocesan Health Coordinator of Madi W. Nile Diocese, said the health screening will help them assess the foot pilgrims’ plan better for those who may require emergency interventions, adding that the diocese is well prepared to help the pilgrims.
The screening will conclude on Thursday, and the foot pilgrims are expected to be flagged off at 4 pm on Friday from Emmanuel Cathedral, Mvara, the headquarters of Madi W. Nile Diocese.
Anaclet Kamushaba, the team leader of Red Cross Arua, assured the pilgrims of full health care services, adding that they have teamed up with district health officers in the districts along the route to Kampala to offer needed health care.
Two of the pilgrims, Sam Tata Apangu, 80 years old and Florence Enzaru, 60 years have expressed determination in the journey of faith, adding that they are strong enough by the grace of God to undertake the pilgrimage.
The six dioceses have formed committees both at the diocesan and national levels and earmarked 2.2 billion Shillings for the event-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
