Police in Kikuube District have arrested a Ugandan woman accused of murdering her stepfather, a Congolese refugee from Kyangwali Refugee Settlement. The suspect, whose identity has been withheld to avoid jeopardizing investigations, is detained at Kikuube Central Police Station on murder charges.

Julius Hakiza, spokesperson for the Albertine Region Police, confirmed the arrest and said investigations are underway. The deceased, identified as Ernest Ndaziramye, 45, was reportedly killed in the early hours of Saturday morning in Kabwoya Sub-county, Kikuube District.

Ndaziramye, a resident of Kyebitaka Block 75 in Kasonga Parish within the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, had reportedly left the settlement to visit his Ugandan spouse in Kabwoya. Her identity had not been established by press time. While at home, Ndaziramye allegedly got into a dispute with his stepdaughter.

She reportedly picked up a hand hoe and struck him multiple times on the head, killing him instantly. Rajab Mustafa, the chairman of Kyebitaka Block 75, confirmed that residents were informed on Saturday about Ndaziramye’s death, which followed a domestic conflict with his stepdaughter.

Ndaziramye hailed from Ishasha in Rutshuru, North Kivu Province, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Efforts to get a comment from Topheous Chali, the Settlement Commandant at Kyangwali, were unsuccessful as her phone was switched off by press time.

In a separate incident, police are investigating the death of Raciu Lonyowegi, a 61-year-old Congolese refugee found dead inside her house on Friday. Lonyowegi was a resident of Kagoma Block 11, Kasonga Parish in Kyangwali Sub-county, where she lived with her husband, Elitie Ongyer, 71.
