Minister Betty Amongi Tells off Gen Otafiire: Your Useless Speeches Won’t Decide Who Becomes New Lira City Woman MP in 2026

By KT Reporter

In a weekend interview with a Kampala newspaper, gender minister Betty Amongi registered her contempt for Gen Severino Kahinda Otafiire’s efforts to influence who becomes the woman MP for Lira city for the period of 2026-2031.

Otafiire sometime back drove to Lira and explained to thousands of incumbent area woman MP Jane Ruth Aceng’s supporters why Amongi was a greedy confused politician who was unfit to be their MP. Otafiire said it was confusion for one to abandon a constituency after 25 years and relocate to another place to antagonize a fellow minister.

He also said that antagonising Museveni’s blue-eyed girl Aceng, who he described as a national treasure because of the excellence with which she led Uganda’s response against the Coronavirus pandemic and Ebola, amounted to the UPC first lady Betty Amongi being ungrateful to the NRM fraternity which had allowed her to be made minister in their mighty ruling party without being required to first denounce her membership and loyalty to UPC.

Now Betty Amongi says that much as its Otafiire’s right to support whoever he pleases, he had better realise that his antagonistic speeches, full of hate for UPC, won’t determine who wins the Lira city race but the city residents will have the last word on who wins.

She says that no one should accuse her of selfishness because the laws of Uganda allow her to stand wherever she chooses. And that the people of Lira city are free to reject her and vote back Aceng if they feel that the minister of health serves their interest better.

Amongi also says that she is standing in Lira city to fill the spousal vacuum which former first lady Miria Obote’s advancing age (she is 86) has created in founding Ugandan president Milton Obote’s household which is headquartered in Lira city, and not Oyam.

But in the same newspaper interview, Amongi was unable to intelligently respond when the journalist demanded to know why she thinks she can only be an effective spouse in Obote’s home if she holds the position of Lira city MP.  Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
