The National Forestry Authority (NFA) has started re-demarcating the boundaries of the Lira Central Forest Reserve located in Lira City East Division.

The central forest reserve covers over 130 hectares of land which has since been encroached on including the land occupied by the Oil Energy Petrol Station along Ngetta Road, and the Abattoir.

Michael Ojah, the manager for Aswa Range explained that although the area was demarcated, the current physical infrastructure makes it hard to identify the boundaries.

Ojah further explained that the forest reserve should be developed into a green space, rallying everyone to protect it.

Bonny Ferdinand Okello Alele, the Assistant Resident City Commissioner believes that once developed, the area will generate revenue for the city. He warned businessmen and civil servants against exploiting avenues to gain access to resources which should have benefited the community.

Lango subregion has over 27 central forest reserves located in different districts although most of them have been encroached on and the encroachers have refused to voluntarily vacate the area and opposed NFA plans to restore the depleted area.
