Uganda Airlines has launched direct flights between Entebbe International Airport and London Gatwick Airport.
The inaugural flight which is set for 18 May, will use the carrier’s latest Airbus A330-800neo aircraft and will be a four-times-a-week service.
Speaking at the launch in Kampala, Edward Wamala-Katumba, the Minister of Works and Transport, expressed optimism of the development, and its broader economic impact. “This direct route is key in Uganda’s Vision 2040 strategy, which prioritizes infrastructure development, economic integration, and global connectivity. Air bridges like this are critical to unlocking Uganda’s potential as a trade and tourism hub in East Africa,” he stated.
He also said that the Entebbe -London Gatwick route, is a strategic development that will advance Uganda’s economic interests, boost tourism enhance national prestige and strengthen international relations.”
Uganda Airlines originally secured landing slots in the UK before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global travel and aviation operations. Delays caused by manpower shortages and supply chain constraints in both Uganda and the UK affected the airline’s ability to complete the necessary regulatory processes on time.
Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Jenifer Bamuturaki hailed the new route as a game-changer for both Uganda and the airline. “This route marks the end of our establishment phase and sets us on the course for long-term growth and expansion. It follows meticulous planning, preparations, and many setbacks, but finally, we are here. This milestone coincides with our 5th anniversary, making it even more special,” she said.
“Uganda, renowned as ‘The Pearl of Africa,’ has long been a favoured destination for British tourists. This direct connection will enhance the travel experience and make it easier for visitors to explore Uganda’s breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, and rich cultural heritage,” Bamuturaki emphasized.
According to the Grant Thornton “Wings of Opportunity” report (2024), Uganda’s exports to the UK were valued at USD 22.6 million last year. “Besides shortening travel times, this route will provide a more efficient channel for exporters of fresh produce, including coffee, flowers, vegetables, and fish, to reach the UK market,” the CEO noted.
London becomes Uganda Airlines’ 17th destination and its third outside Africa, following Dubai and Mumbai. These add to the African network of 14 cities, including Nairobi, Johannesburg, Kinshasa, Lagos, and Accra.
The UK remains one of Uganda’s largest tourism source markets, with thousands of British travellers visiting the country each year. The direct flights will provide added convenience for tourists and business travellers alike.
Priscilla Mirembe Serukka, the Chairperson of the Uganda Airlines board, said the route, eliminates layovers and long transit times which come with a lot of advantages. “This will encourage more UK-based visitors to choose Uganda as their next destination,” she said the resulting increase in arrivals will generate employment opportunities in Uganda’s tourism sector and contribute significantly to the country’s Gross Domestic Product,” Sserukka said.
She also said that the flights would benefit the large Ugandan diaspora community in the UK by providing a more efficient travel option for those visiting home.
