Obongi district leaders have raised concerns about the substandard works on the Ewafa resource centre, which was constructed for 500 million shillings.

The facility was constructed in the 2022/23 financial year with funding from the World Bank through the Development Response to Displacement Impacts Project (DRDIP).

Construction of the Ewafa Resource Center started on September 23, 2022, and by July 6, 2023, the contractor, Obongi Prime Enterprises, declared the work was complete.    However, the resource centre has since developed visible cracks on the floor and the ceiling, causing fear among the users of the facility.

Samuel Mpimbasa Hashaka, the RDC of Obongi district, expressed disappointment over what he termed as shoddy work, which is likely to put the lives of its occupants at risk.

Hashaka demanded that the building should be demolished, as the lives of the workers of Ewafa Sub-county, who are now using it, are at risk.

Alexander Atiku, the chairperson of Ewafa Sub County, said that the structure developed cracks immediately after completion and attempts to fill the cracks failed.

Atiku expressed worry that the building might collapse on them as the cracks are increasing.

Buga Habib Khemis, the chairperson of Obongi district, while responding on the matter explained that the resource centre was well constructed, but the cracks developed because of the loose ground on which the building stands.

Khemis asked the district engineer to instruct the contractor to repair the cracks before commissioning.

Benson Humphrey Otim, the chief administrative officer of Obongi district, also stressed that the resource centre was completed, but the cracks developed later on. Otim explained that they had already notified the contractor about fixing the faults-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
