The Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR) cultural institution has denied claims that Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere endorsed a candidate for the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election. The institution urged all stakeholders to respect its neutrality and allow it to continue serving its noble role of fostering peace, unity, and socio-economic transformation.

This follows a viral video in which former Leader of the Opposition and Kasese Woman MP Winnie Kiiza is seen claiming that she was sent by the Omusinga to drum up support for the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Luwimbazi Elias Nalukoola.

The institution has warned Kiiza and other politicians against using the name of the King or the OBR in political matters. In a statement released by the Acting Prime Minister, Benson Kule Baritazale, the kingdom issued a stern warning to all political actors, stating that any misrepresentation of the King’s position would attract legal action.

“We categorically state that His Majesty Omusinga Irema-Ngoma is non-partisan and has never authorized or delegated Hon. Winnie Kiiza or any other person to speak on his behalf in any political campaign,” the statement read.

The Prime Minister reiterated that OBR is a unifying cultural institution whose mission transcends politics. He emphasized that it is unacceptable for any politician or political group to manipulate the King’s name or the institution for personal or political party gains. “Our loyal subjects and well-wishers are universal, cutting across different political, social, and ideological affiliations,” the statement noted. Since his release from prison in 2023, Mumbere and the entire OBR institution have distanced themselves from political matters and have, on several occasions, warned politicians against using the institution’s name for political gains-URN.
