Kawempe By-Election: Tear Gas, Bullets Disrupt Nalukoola’s Final Rally

Tear gas and live bullets marked the climax of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Erias Luyimbazzi Nalukoola’s final campaign rally on Tuesday evening as police clashed with his supporters.

The chaos erupted when security forces blocked supporters attempting to access Komamboga playground via Gayaza Road. Earlier, Nalukoola had been forced to shift his rally from Bwaise to Komamboga after the Electoral Commission intervened to prevent a potential clash with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s team, which was campaigning for Faridah Nambi, the NRM candidate at Kawempe Mbogo playground.

Tensions escalated when Nalukoola and his supporters, marching from Kyebando towards Komamboga, were intercepted by a heavy police deployment. As they attempted to push through the security barricade, running battles broke out, with police firing tear gas and live bullets to disperse the crowd.

Amid the chaos, several supporters were arrested, while others collapsed due to excessive tear gas inhalation. Nalukoola was briefly detained but later released and directed to use an alternative route via Bahai Road to reach Komamboga.

Earlier, NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu had announced that they had accepted to shift their rally to Komamboga to avoid violence.

“The criminal regime has blocked our planned last rally at Bwaise 1, claiming that it is on the route to be used by Dictator Museveni! Effectively, this means NUP is not allowed to campaign in all parishes of Kawempe North. They have said we can only meet in Komamboga, where our candidate Nalukoola already campaigned. In order not to give them the excuse of beating, abducting, or killing our people, we are going back to Komamboga,” Kyagulanyi said-URN.
