Mukono municipality has launched an operation to clean up the town by relocating roadside taxis and closing illegal taxi parks. The initiative, which follows a directive from the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, is now being implemented in Mukono Central Division with support from both leaders and taxi operators.

The effort aims to direct all vehicles into the designated Mukono Taxi Park, where passengers can be safely found. However, there is some resistance from taxi operators, particularly regarding the limited space in the Mukono Taxi Park. Some drivers argue that the park is too small and congested, especially with the presence of special cars and lorries, which make it difficult for the taxis to operate.

Despite these concerns, others in the park support the initiative, as they believe it will reduce risks for passengers who have previously been robbed after boarding taxis on the road. The operation, which involves law enforcement officers and uniformed enforcement teams, will be ongoing for a month, with fines for defying the regulations.

The Deputy Mayor, Zaidi Kabugo, has urged politicians not to disrupt the plan for personal gain, emphasizing that cooperation with traffic police will be essential for its success. Abubaker Wasajja, the Mukono Central Division Town Clerk, clarified that the operation would last for one month.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration with traffic police, with drivers found breaking the law facing a penalty of Shs. 60,000 or the towing of their vehicles to municipal council offices. This move is a step toward improving town order and safety, although balancing the concerns of all stakeholders, including taxi operators and passengers, will be crucial for the success of the plan-URN.
