Another traditional circumcision surgeon in Namisindwa district narrowly survived lynching after severing the penis of a candidate during a circumcision ritual. The surgeon, identified as Husain Namakanga, escaped an attack by angry kadodi dancers after the incident at Bumakolota village, Bukokho Parish, Bukokho Sub-County.

Eyewitness Michael Koyi recounted that Namakanga accidentally severed the boy’s penis during the procedure. This triggered the enraged kadodi dancers, armed with sticks, to attack him. Namakanga was rescued by locals who rushed him to the nearby Bumbo Police Post.

The boy’s father, Samuel Wetula, attributed the mishap to the surgeon’s haste, urging Inzu Ya Masaba, the cultural institution overseeing circumcision rituals in the Bugisu region, to regulate traditional surgeons. Wetula suggested limiting surgeons to circumcising no more than two candidates per day to prevent such incidents.

Fred Wakoko, Chairperson of Surgeons at Inzu Ya Masaba, revealed that Namakanga is not an approved surgeon under their institution. He stated that of over 1,000 traditional surgeons in Bugisu, fewer than 500 are certified by Inzu Ya Masaba. Wakoko urged the public to only engage approved practitioners to ensure safety.

Wilson Watila, the chairman of the Imbalu committee at Inzu Ya Masaba, says that individuals who defy the Inzu Ya Masaba circumcision calendar are responsible for the ongoing issues, which he attributes to offending the ancestors (Bakuka). He explained that, according to the Inzu Ya Masaba circumcision roadmap for December, Namisindwa District is scheduled to conduct circumcisions on the 13th of this month.

Watila urged both registered and unregistered surgeons to take their time during the circumcision process, limiting the number of boys circumcised per day as a way to reduce complications. He also noted that each boy is charged 50,000 UGX, which may prompt some surgeons to rush through procedures to handle more cases elsewhere.
