When former Kawempe MP Mohammed Segirinya died on 9th January 2025, fellow MPs raised significant sums of money to support his family and more so the children he left behind. He also had his own pension from parliament which had become his place of work.

All this was supposed to be collected and put together to be passed on to his family but this has never happened because of the wrangling over his estates. He left several women with children and some of the widows ganged up against their mother-in-law and also against some orphans.

This wrangling has made it hard to get letters of administration without which no one can legally be recognized as a legitimate representative of the dead MP’s estate. While his children and widows have continued to live in misery, the money to which the estate is entitled remains stuck in parliament because there is no agreed upon representative to whom it can be handed.

On Saturday, a CBS radio caller grilled parliament sacco chairman Robert Migadde, the MP for Buvuma, about Segirinya’s money. Migadde (a panelist on CBS’ Parliament Yaffe program which airs every Saturday) said the money was there and it has even accumulated a lot of interest but it can’t be released to help the children because endless wrangling in the family has left the leadership of parliament confused as to who should be dealt with.

It was confirmed that even the money MPs contributed was passed on to boost Segirinya’s well-documented savings with the sacco of parliament which Migadde chairs. Migadde (who was appearing with MP Erias Nalukoola who replaced Segirinya & Mpindi Bumali the PWDs MP who also comes from Kawempe) added that senior lawyer Medard Segona had been tasked with sitting down with the family to get them agree so that the money can be accessed but he too got frustrated and gave up after some of the widows made unreasonable demands.

Migadde said the money will continue growing and producing interest until the family members will feel enough pain and come back to their senses and approach parliament as a united front. Wrangling over deceased person’s estate is very common in Ugandan families and Segirinya’s orphans aren’t the only ones to suffer from such.
