Fighting between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and a coalition of Wazalendo fighters and the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), formerly known as M23/AFC, erupted on Monday on several fronts in South Kivu Province. Local residents reported clashes in Mitimbili and Munanira in Kaziba Sector, Walungu Territory.
Fighting was also reported in Kuwihene, Rugezi, Point Zéro and surrounding areas in the Minembwe region of Fizi Territory. Lawrence Kanyuka, the FRN spokesperson, confirmed the clashes in a statement released on Monday evening.
He accused FARDC and Wazalendo fighters of launching attacks using kamikaze drones and heavy artillery, including 120mm and 82mm mortars. Kanyuka said FRN fighters were acting in self-defence.
Later in the evening, the group released videos claiming its fighters had advanced to Kawezi, near Uvira.
The group also circulated photographs and videos of firearms and ammunition, claiming the items had been abandoned by FARDC soldiers and allied fighters. The claims could not be independently verified.
FARDC had not issued a statement on the latest clashes by the time of publication.
The reported fighting comes amid the movement’s declared intention to expand its military campaign beyond its existing areas of operation, including to the capital, Kinshasa, with the stated aim of overthrowing the government of President Félix Tshisekedi.
The Congolese government has repeatedly accused Rwanda of supporting the rebel movement. Kigali and the rebels have denied the allegations.
The FRN says its armed campaign is intended to address what it describes as corruption, discrimination and other grievances within the Congolese government. The latest clashes add to insecurity in North and South Kivu, where fighting involving armed groups has displaced civilians despite ongoing regional and international efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire-URN.
