Newly crowned Omukama of Tooro Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I has pledged to unite the people of the kingdom and work with all stakeholders to promote development and improve his subjects’ lives.
Delivering his maiden address at his coronation ceremony at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City on Tuesday, King Nyabongo thanked the people of Tooro for the support and love they have shown him since he was selected to succeed the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
He began his speech by asking everyone to stand up and observe a moment of silence in honour of the late Omukama Oyo. He condoled with the former Queen Mother Best Kemigisa for the loss of her son and the people of Tooro for losing their beloved king.
Nyabongo then thanked the Babiito 21-member committee for selecting and entrusting him to be the next king of Tooro.
He emphasised the need for unity among the people, saying bringing together different ideas and groups would help move the kingdom forward. He also pledged that his reign would focus on bringing people together and creating opportunities for the kingdom to move forward. He called on the Batooro to work together and contribute ideas that can help advance the kingdom.
Nyabongo also pledged to work with the government to communicate the interests and concerns of the people of Tooro. He said the kingdom would support government programs aimed at economic transformation, environmental conservation and encouraging communities to participate in development initiatives.
The King further called on parents to take responsibility for educating their children, saying education remains important in preparing young people for the future.
Nyabongo said his administration would work closely with other cultural institutions, religious leaders, elders and clans in Tooro to strengthen cooperation.
His accession to the throne follows a period of disagreement within the Tooro royal family over the succession of Oyo, with some members of the royal family initially rejecting the announcement of Nyabongo as the next King-URN.
