Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) leaders have urged residents of the Rwenzori region to reject tribalism and religious division, saying unity is essential for development.

The leaders appealed on Friday during the opening of the PLU district office in Bunyangabu.

Judith Mukiidi, the PLU Tooro Sub-region Women League Coordinator and former Fort Portal City Woman MP candidate, urged young people in Tooro to focus on shared concerns and reject leaders who divide communities along tribal or religious lines. She also encouraged young people and women to take an active role in local politics as the country prepares for a transition.

PLU mobiliser Brian Asaba said Bunyangabu had lagged in development partly because some leaders had divided residents along tribal lines, weakening unity and cooperation. He said PLU members support Kainerugaba because they believe he can help sustain peace and create a foundation for socio-economic development.

Michael Mawanda Maranga, Igara East MP and PLU director of mobilisation, said the organisation plans to promote patriotism through schools. He said people who feel ownership of their country are more likely to reject divisive tendencies.

Daudi Kabanda of the PLU secretariat called on residents to put Uganda ahead of tribal and religious affiliations. He also encouraged young people to join the organisation, describing it as a platform for national leadership.

Kabanda said Kainerugaba could not assume power without public support and dismissed claims that President Yoweri Museveni was plotting to have his son succeed him. John Kyaligoza says politicians and political parties should focus on bringing people together for common aspirations-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
