President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has assured the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that Uganda will meet the requirements needed to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Kenya and Tanzania. Museveni made the commitment on Tuesday during a meeting with CAF Secretary General Samson Adamu, who is in Uganda with CAF Country Infrastructure Manager Bianca Wambui and a technical team assessing the country’s preparedness for the continental tournament.
The delegation briefed the President on its findings after inspecting stadiums, training grounds and other infrastructure required for the tournament, which is scheduled for June 2027. CAF commended Uganda’s progress, particularly in the development of stadiums and training facilities.
Wambui said the country had made notable progress, but Uganda still has work to do to meet all the tournament requirements. “I would like to commend the efforts that have been put in so far, especially in terms of the stadiums and training grounds. The progress is commendable,” she said.
Museveni said the government would address the outstanding requirements and pledged to personally intervene where necessary to ensure the work is completed.
“We hosted NAM here, which comprised 150 countries, and we were able to deal with them. The Kampala area has the facilities, but now the challenge is upcountry, which we are now going to concentrate on,” Museveni said.He added that the government would remove any obstacles affecting Uganda’s preparations.
“I will unlock whatever needs to be unlocked, and I’m very sure the AFCON people will be very happy when they come here,” he said. The CAF Secretary General also asked Museveni to support a single visa arrangement for Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania to ease the movement of football fans, teams and tournament officials across the three host countries.
The proposed arrangement is intended to allow visitors attending the tournament to move more easily between the three countries during the competition. Museveni said he would engage his counterparts in Kenya and Tanzania on the proposal, adding that discussions on the initiative had already started.
“I have got all my orders, and I’m going to implement them,” he said. AFCON 2027 will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania under the Pamoja arrangement, bringing the continental tournament back to East Africa.
