Police in Maracha District have shot dead a suspected armed robber and recovered an SMG in a failed robbery attempt at Nyadri Trading Center. The 7:40 pm surprise Monday incident occurred at Asili Fuel Station, located in Buramali cell, Maracha Town Council, Maracha District.
According to a report from the police, three-armed robbers had attacked Asili Fuel Station, but some of the workers and neighbors to the station raised the alarm, prompting the police in the nearby district headquarters to respond.
Josephine Angucia, the police spokesperson from West Nile confirmed the incident and said upon getting the information on the robbery, police quickly responded and shot dead one suspect during crossfire as the thugs attempted to shoot at the police.
Angucia explained that one suspect with an SMG gun was shot and died on the spot, and his gun was recovered at the scene; meanwhile, two other suspects escaped in an unknown direction.
Angucia added that a team of officers immediately launched a hunt and is still pursuing the armed robbers who escaped.
The body of the deceased was taken to Maracha Hospital for identification by relatives, as police call for calm among locals and the business community in the district and the region. According to a security report, the suspected robbers are believed to be part of armed gangs that operate between Arua and South Sudan-URN.
