One firearm has been recovered from armed Karamojong warriors following a serious fire exchange with joint security forces in Karenga District.
According to police, ASTU personnel from Kawalakol Detachment and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF carried out a targeted foot patrol on 17th August 2026 in Kakem Mining Area, Kalele Village, Kokoro Parish, Kawalakol Sub-county, Karenga District.
The operation, conducted at around 6:00 am, targeted an area known to be a hideout for notorious armed warriors who have been terrorizing miners and local communities.
During the patrol, the joint team encountered an unknown armed warrior in the bush. Upon sighting the officers, the suspect opened fire and attempted to escape.
Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect dropped the gun and fled.
“During the exchange, the suspect sustained injuries and fled the scene and an SMG was recovered with the following particulars,” Longole said. “Gun Registration No. 0426 and Bolt No. NI 1817.”
He noted that the recovered firearm has been secured and is being processed as an exhibit for further ballistic analysis and investigation.
“Security forces have intensified operations in the area to apprehend the injured suspect and other criminal element,” Longole added. “Patrols and community engagements are ongoing to ensure the safety of miners and residents.”
He said the UPF and UPDF reaffirm their commitment to rid the Karamoja sub-region of illegal arms and restore lasting peace: “We urge the public to cooperate with security by reporting any suspicious persons, especially those with gunshot wounds seeking treatment,” he added-URN.
