The internationally recognised marathon is scheduled for August 22 in Kasese District and is expected to attract thousands of athletes and visitors from Uganda and abroad.

Speaking during a media briefing in Kasese town, former State Minister for ICT and National Guidance Godfrey Kabyanga said the event presents an opportunity for local communities to benefit economically by providing services to participants and visitors.

He encouraged residents to offer food, accommodation, transport and other tourism-related services to the expected visitors.

Kabyanga also urged participants and tourists to take advantage of the marathon to explore the Rwenzori Mountains and other attractions in the region.

Kabyanga, a former mayor of Kasese Municipality, said the marathon provides an opportunity for Ugandans to earn money while promoting the country’s tourism potential.

He said more than 4,000 runners had registered for the event, in addition to spectators and other visitors expected to travel to Kasese.

Kasese District Police Commander, SP Hassan Hiwumbire, said police, working with other security agencies, had put in place measures to ensure the safety of participants, spectators and visitors throughout the event.
