Construction of Nyadri Urban Senior Secondary School in Maracha District has started under the Uganda Secondary Education Expansion Project (USEEP), a government programme supported by the World Bank to expand access to secondary education. The project, launched by Maracha district leaders with support from the Ministry of Education and Sports, is being implemented at a contract cost of Shs3.043 billion by BAMK Real Estate and Contractors Ltd.
The Ministry has given the contractor 10 months to complete the project. Under the project scope, the school will receive new classroom blocks, an administration block, a science laboratory, an ICT/library block and staff accommodation. The project will also include teachers’ kitchens and latrines, separate latrine facilities for boys, girls and teachers, a waste incinerator, water supply facilities, electricity connection to the national grid, a sports field, multi-purpose hall and external works.
The project will further provide furniture, instructional materials and equipment for the science laboratory. Speaking at the launch, Collins Dramani, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner, urged the contractor and district authorities to adhere to the approved designs and specifications and complete the project within the agreed timeframe.
“We need delivery of quality work that guarantees value for money, transparency and accountability,” Dramani said. He also called for close cooperation between the contractor, district technical team and local leaders to ensure smooth implementation and timely completion of the project. Maracha District Local Government chairman Emmanuel Wani called for teamwork among stakeholders and regular monitoring of the project to address challenges as they emerge.
“All stakeholders should ensure strict adherence to approved project guidelines, specifications and quality standards,” Wani said. He added that the project should prioritise the employment of local labour and procurement of quality local materials. Wani also urged stakeholders to comply with social safeguards, including fair employment terms, workers’ safety and environmental protection. He called for prompt payment of the contractor to avoid delays and said timely sharing of project documents by the Ministry would strengthen supervision and accountability.
BAMK Real Estate and Contractors Ltd, in a written commitment, pledged to complete the project within the 10-month contract period while maintaining the required quality standards. The contractor also committed to providing on-the-job training to locally employed workers, working closely with district authorities and community leaders, and maintaining open communication with stakeholders throughout implementation.
Richard Anguzu, a Maracha resident, welcomed the project, saying it would contribute to the district’s development. “This is an important project for the district, and together with the presidential hub and other developments, it clearly shows that Maracha is on the right trajectory,” Anguzu said. Once completed, Nyadri Urban Senior Secondary School is expected to increase access to secondary education in Maracha, reduce the distance learners travel to school, and support the government’s efforts to provide more equitable access to quality secondary education under USEEP-URN.
