Uganda has opened its medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after para-swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe won a silver medal in the women’s 100-metre breaststroke SB8 final, becoming the country’s first medallist of the competition.
Kukundakwe delivered a strong performance to finish second in a time of 1:26.20, securing Uganda’s first podium finish at the Games. England’s Brock Whiston claimed gold after setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 1:22.05, while compatriot Lona Winnifrith took bronze in 1:26.31.
Speaking after the race, Kukundakwe described the achievement as a proud moment for both herself and the country. “I am very happy to win this silver medal for Uganda. It is a proud moment for me, and I thank everyone who has supported me throughout my journey.
This medal motivates me to keep working harder and aim even higher,” Kukundakwe said. Uganda’s national para-swimming coach, Muzafaru Muwanguzi, praised Kukundakwe’s performance, saying the medal reflected years of hard work and determination.
“Husnah has shown great resilience and commitment throughout her preparations. Winning Uganda’s first medal at these Games is a proud moment for the entire country and the para-swimming fraternity,” Muwanguzi said.
The silver medal adds to Kukundakwe’s growing list of international achievements, having consistently represented Uganda at major global para-swimming competitions. Her success also provides an early boost to Uganda’s medal campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games as more Ugandan athletes continue competing in Glasgow-URN.
