Residents of Aduku Town Council in Kwania District joined the rest of the country in observing the newly declared National Cleaning Day. On Thursday, the government announced the last Saturday of every month as National Cleaning Day.
Every last Saturday of the month, Ugandans are required to suspend their regular activities for three hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m, and take part in cleaning their communities in an effort to keep them clean, healthy, and safe.
In compliance with the government’s three-hour sanitation directive under the slogan “A Clean Uganda is Everybody’s Responsibility”, local streets were cleared of traffic and shops remained closed as the community engaged in cleanup activities.
The residents, joined by students from Father Guido Cellana Primary School, swept the back streets of Aduku Town Council and Aduku Daily Market. Meanwhile, other residents cleaned the compound of Aduku HCIV hospital and St. Peter’s Cathedral Church, the West Lango diocesan headquarters.
While launching the national cleaning days in Aduku town council earlier this morning, Abraham Aturu, Kwania deputy Resident District Commissioner, said plans are underway to incorporate all the local leaders in the national cleaning exercise for the sustainability of the program.
Kadogo Paul, Kwania District Police Commander hailed the community members for their active participation during the launch of the exercise, saying no suspect was arrested during the launch of the program for faulting the directive.
Alex Egwar, Aduku town council Health Inspector rallied the community to embrace and actively participate in the national cleaning day. He said the initiative once embraced will go a long way to prevent an outbreak of hygiene related diseases like cholera and diarrhoea.
Locals who spoke to Uganda Radio Network -URN welcomed the initiative and hailed the government for the national cleaning exercise intended to promote cleanliness in the country.
