Kampala lord mayor Balimwezo was expected by foot soldiers to be the fearless man who would lead other party leaders in criticizing the CDF about their vice president Muwanga Kivumbi’s re-arrest. He was re-arrested on Friday after saying nasty things about the CDF and other members of president Museveni’s family. Muwanga also belittled Museveni saying his voice would soon fail and also belittled the first lady Janet while making fun of her health.
Muwanga had promised to be at Kavule on Monday and explain his newly found formula which he said the party would be using to weaken Museveni and Gen Kainerugaba and remove them from the chair. His speech had excited many foot soldiers who had been discouraged by NUP top leaders’ failure to stand up to the president’s son. They were waiting to hear more on Monday when Muwanga had promise to recharge the struggle.
Foot soldiers wanted NUP to criticize the CDF about Muwanga’s re-arrest but all leaders were quiet and fearing that doing so would create more problems for Joel Ssenyonyi as LoP after the CDF’s supporters led by MP Denis Namara came up with a bill for his removal from his very profitable office. In Muwanga’s absence, foot soldiers thought Balimwezo would be the man to lead the blame game against general Kainerugaba and his group at Kavule.
But they felt disappointed when Balimwezo got the microphone at Kavule during the Monday press conference and became nervous and feared to say anything about Muwanga Kivumbi. Balimwezo didn’t say anything about the drone operations yet foot soldiers expected him to be the Kampala-based commander for the change forces the way Erias Lukwago was.
Instead, Balimwezo dodged the hard task and only talked about the upcoming LC elections and called on foot soldiers to stand for such positions because that is a very important office in the country. He advised them to remain peaceful and look for the vote without causing acts of violence which can cause the government soldiers to be annoyed with them.
Some of those standing for the LC positions, who became NUP flag bearers without the party organizing any primary elections to choose them, expected rich man Balimwezo to promise them money and logistical support like posters but nothing of the sort was announced by the very funny lord mayor who is very good at cracking jokes.
