Two people, including a minor, are nursing serious injuries after surviving separate crocodile attacks along the River Nile in Mukale Parish, Pakwach Sub-county, on Thursday. The attacks have raised fresh concerns about safety among communities that depend on the river for their livelihoods.

According to eyewitnesses and local leaders, both victims are residents of Kanyinyi Upper Village. The attacks occurred at Wicawa Landing Site in Mulima Village at different times while the victims were fishing along the same stretch of the River Nile.

Robert Longer, the Secretary for Production in Pakwach Sub-county, said the first incident occurred shortly before midday when a crocodile attacked the minor as he entered the water. Residents responded quickly, rescued the boy and rushed him to Angal Hospital for treatment.

Longer said the second victim, an adult fisherman, was attacked later in the evening while using a hook to fish at the same location. Nearby residents managed to rescue him before he was taken to Angal Hospital with serious injuries.

Local leaders said many fishermen have increasingly resorted to hook fishing along the riverbanks due to fears arising from ongoing security operations. At the same time, many households continue to depend on the River Nile for domestic water, heightening concerns about public safety following the attacks.

Pakwach District Wildlife Officer Ben Odongo commended residents for their swift response in rescuing the victims. He urged members of the public to report wildlife incidents promptly to local authorities and the police to enable timely intervention. Odongo also advised residents to avoid the affected section of the river until wildlife experts assess the situation and take appropriate action-URN.
