Takatwi District Local Government has allocated over 15 acres of land for the construction of a proposed super-specialized hospital, marking a major step towards improving access to advanced healthcare services in the Teso sub-region. The land, located opposite Katakwi General Hospital, includes the former district administration offices and staff quarters.
It has been earmarked for the construction of the new specialist health facility. The proposed hospital is part of a government initiative, in partnership with United States-based partners, to establish two fully equipped, modern specialist hospitals in Katakwi and Lwengo districts.
The facilities are intended to improve access to specialized treatment, particularly for non-communicable diseases, in underserved regions. Vice President Jessica Rose Alupo announced the development during a press conference in Katakwi on Sunday, saying preparations for the project are progressing and that a groundbreaking ceremony will be announced soon.
Alupo said President Yoweri Museveni, in a letter dated February 1, 2024, directed that the government, working with US partners, establish two fully equipped, Western-standard specialist hospitals in Katakwi and Lwengo districts.
She urged the public to embrace preventive healthcare by observing proper hygiene and sanitation, attending regular medical check-ups, ensuring children receive routine immunization, and encouraging expectant mothers to attend antenatal care to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Alupo also reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s healthcare system by upgrading existing health facilities and constructing Health Centre IIIs in sub-counties and Health Centre IVs at the county level where they are lacking.
Katakwi District LCV Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo confirmed that the district had allocated the land to facilitate the project. He said the hospital would not only improve access to specialized healthcare for residents of Katakwi and neighbouring districts in eastern and northern Uganda, but would also stimulate infrastructure development, trade and investment in the area-URN.
