Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has confirmed that former Minister of Ethics and Integrity Miria Matembe is in security custody, days after her family reported that she had gone missing following a raid on her Luzira residence. Responding to a post on X that mentioned Matembe, Gen. Muhoozi wrote: “That one. I have her too.”
Her lawyers and close associates say Matembe is being held at the Mbuya military detention facility, although authorities have not issued a detailed public statement on the circumstances of her arrest. Matembe’s husband, Nehemiah Matembe, said security operatives raided their Luzira home on Wednesday last week, searched the premises and left without identifying themselves or explaining the purpose of the operation.
“Two of them came in through the kitchen, while another used the main door and stayed on the balcony facing outward. They found me in the sitting room. I asked who they were and what they wanted, but they ignored me. They searched the bedroom and bathroom, then came back. I kept asking questions, but they never responded,” he said.
Since the raid, Matembe’s family said they had been unable to reach her, with her phones switched off, prompting concerns over her whereabouts. Her husband said he reported the matter to police but received no assistance.
“I don’t know where my wife is. No one has told me anything about her whereabouts. I’m here worried because there has been no news about her. I reported the case at my nearest police station in Kitintale. When I got no help, I went to Jinja Road Police Station, but everyone I spoke to just walked away,” Matembe’s husband said-URN.
