Members of Parliament from Kasese District are urging the local community to adhere to Ebola prevention standard operating procedures (SOPs). They fear that non-adherence will prevent the 5th edition of the Mt. Rwenzori Tusker Lite Marathon, slated for August 22, 2026, from taking place. The MPs note that the district cannot afford to postpone this internationally recognized event due to the Ebola outbreak.

This year, the marathon gained prominence as Uganda’s first World Athletics Label Road Race. In February, the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon was awarded World Athletics Label Road Race status, becoming the first marathon in Uganda and the only third one in East Africa to receive the prestigious international designation. The designation confirmed that the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon meets stringent international standards, including AIMS-certified course measurement, full electronic timing, closed roads, and the hosting of an international elite field.

Following the outbreak of the virus, Uganda announced new measures to contain its spread, including the closure of the borders with DR. Congo. Despite its proximity to DRC, Kasese has not recorded a case yet. There is fear that if cases of Ebola are recorded in Kasese, this year’s marathon could be called off for health reasons.

The MPs note the importance of community cooperation and border security with the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially at the border crossing in Kasese and Bundibugyo, to prevent the spread of Ebola and safeguard the event.

Sarah Ithungu Baleke, the District Chairperson of Kasese, expressed pride in the marathon’s history, noting that Kasese has successfully hosted 4 editions of the race. She stressed that the event has significantly elevated Kasese’s global profile and boosted the local economy.

David Mulindwa Isimbwa, the Member of Parliament for Busongora South Constituency, added that last year’s marathon attracted over 5,000 runners, turning it into a vital business opportunity, especially for the rural communities in the region. He called on residents to cooperate fully with health and security officials to prevent Ebola from affecting the event.

Kasese will also host the Rwenzori Theluji Festival, which celebrates the region’s unique biodiversity. The festival aims to promote tourism and showcase Kasese’s natural beauty, further emphasizing the district’s global significance. As the country is concerned about major public gatherings over the Ebola outbreak, local authorities and community leaders remain optimistic that with adherence to health protocols and security measures, the 2026 Rwenzori Tusker Lite Marathon will take place-URN.
