Police in Pader District are investigating the death of a 70-year-old man who was found hanging inside a house in Angagura Sub-county in a suspected suicide incident. The deceased, identified as Wilfred Nyeko, a resident of Lalworo Village in Paicho Sub-county, Gulu District, was found dead on June 16 at the home of his lover, Aciro Everine, in Atyaka Ward.
According to police, preliminary findings indicate that Nyeko and Aciro, who had lived together for about one and a half years, developed misunderstandings on June 10. Police say Nyeko later left Aciro’s home with his belongings and moved to his uncle Michael Kibwota’s residence, where he stayed for about a week.
Aswa East Region Police spokesperson IP Joe Oloya said that on the morning of June 16, Nyeko allegedly met Aciro while she was going to collect mangoes, but did not speak to her before proceeding to her residence. “It is alleged that he entered the house and locked himself inside,” Oloya said.
Aciro reportedly tried several times to convince him to open the door but received no response. She later alerted the LC I Chairperson of Atyaka Ward, Alfred Layoo, who responded with other community members. After forcing entry into the house, they reportedly found Nyeko hanging. Police were then notified.A case of suspected suicide by hanging was registered at Pader Central Police Station. Homicide detectives and officers from Angagura Police Station visited the scene, which was examined and documented. The body was taken to Pajule Health Centre IV Mortuary for postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Oloya said police have recorded statements from witnesses, and investigations are ongoing. He urged people facing emotional, social, or domestic challenges to seek support from family members, community leaders, religious leaders, or professional counsellors-URN.
