The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has donated a brand-new ambulance to Terego District to enhance emergency response and referral health services for both refugees and host communities.
The Land Cruiser ambulance, registration number DA 208 106U, also comes with a fuel coupon intended to support routine health operations, particularly at Ocea, Siripi, and Imvepi health centres, Grade III facilities located in refugee-hosting areas of the district. UNHCR Coordinator for Terego District, Paula Viko, who handed over the ambulance to district leaders, said the vehicle replaces an older unit that had reached its operational limit of 200,000 kilometres.
Terego District Chief Administrative Officer, Charles Kumakech Oluba, said the ambulance will improve the district’s health service delivery, especially in referrals, which are a key performance indicator for the health sector.
The new ambulance increases Terego District’s fleet to four vehicles; a development leaders say will significantly improve the timely transportation of emergency patients and referral cases.
However, Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Rose Munduni cautioned against misuse of the ambulance, urging that it must strictly be used for referral services benefiting both refugees and host communities, particularly expectant mothers and critical patients.
District Chairperson Wilfred Saka also emphasized the need for compliance with the UNHCR Right-of-Use Agreement, urging proper maintenance of the ambulance and adherence to approved usage guidelines and destinations. The donation follows the signing of a UNHCR Right-of-Use Agreement, which outlines conditions for the operation, maintenance, and appropriate use of the ambulance to ensure it serves its intended referral health purposes-URN.
