Ayivu Division Council in Arua city has recognised the contribution of its pioneer councillors, awarding them certificates in appreciation of their service.
The councillors, who served between 2021 and 2026, were credited with laying the foundation for key development projects that continue to shape service delivery in the division.According to division authorities, the recognition is intended to honour their role in establishing administrative structures and supporting early governance systems following the creation of Arua City.
The Division Town Clerk, Geoffrey Magoba, said the gesture was meant to acknowledge the councillors’ efforts and encourage continued commitment to public service. “We give out these certificates to all former councillors who served in the first council in recognition of their work. This is to encourage good service by councillors for the division,” Magoba said.
He added that the contributions of the former leaders could not be overlooked, noting that they had played a key role in the development of Ayivu Division and set a foundation for current leadership.
About 80 former councillors from across the division were recognised. Those who chaired various committees also received additional certificates for their leadership roles.
Many of the councillors did not return to office due to changes in administrative arrangements following the creation of Arua City, while others lost in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries or opted not to contest again.
Former Komite Ward councillor, Andiku Paul Aguta, who also served on the finance committee, welcomed the recognition but urged current leaders to prioritise service delivery over personal interests.
Another former councillor, Ayikoru Betty of Aliru and Kamule Wards and a member of the Social Services Committee, said the recognition was encouraging and long overdue, citing their contribution to community development.
The division leadership, including the Mayor, Town Clerk, and Resident City Commissioner, were also recognised for their service in the previous council. Officials say the initiative is part of efforts to strengthen institutional memory and promote accountability and commitment among current and future leaders-URN.
