Kampala — The Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has commended district party leaders for their decisive role in securing the party’s recent electoral victory and called for renewed mobilization ahead of the next week’s presidential inauguration at Kololo ceremonial grounds.
Addressing NRM district chairpersons and administrative secretaries at the party Secretariat in Kampala on Wednesday, Todwong credited grassroots structures for delivering a strong national performance, noting that the party attained 71.6% in the presidential vote, with most districts registering over 70 percent support.
“This victory belongs to you,” he said. “It is proof that when we work together as a team, the NRM becomes even stronger,” Todwong said.
He highlighted the party’s dominance across elective positions, including district chairperson seats and local councils, describing the results as a clear demonstration of the NRM’s continued popularity and organizational strength nationwide.
Todwong urged the leaders to maintain momentum by updating party structures at the village level ahead of upcoming electoral processes. He emphasized the need to verify candidates for LCI positions across all villages to ensure full representation when elections are called.
The Secretary General also reiterated ongoing efforts to strengthen coordination between party and government structures, including proposed amendments aimed at enhancing the role of NRM leaders within local government executive systems.
Reflecting on the just-concluded campaigns, Todwong attributed success to a strong presidential candidate and a people-centered manifesto focused on improving household incomes and addressing everyday challenges faced by Ugandans.
“Our message resonated with wananchi because it spoke directly to their needs,” he said, applauding district leaders for effective mobilization that ensured large turnouts at rallies across the country.
Turning to preparations for the presidential swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 12, 2026 at Kololo Independence Grounds, Todwong called on district leaders to mobilize delegations from their areas to witness the historic event.
“As stakeholders in this victory, it is important that we come together to witness the inauguration of our President,” he noted.
He further revealed that the ceremony is expected to attract wide international attention, with several fraternal political parties from Africa and beyond confirming participation. These delegations, he said, are keen to learn from the NRM’s experience as a long-serving and successful political movement.
Todwong encouraged district leaders to be ready to engage with visiting delegations and showcase the party’s achievements and grassroots strength.
On internal party matters, he reaffirmed the importance of discipline, noting that issues involving members who contested as independents against party flag bearers are being handled in line with party structures.
He also outlined plans to strengthen the party’s institutional capacity through the construction of district offices and a permanent national headquarters. Districts with available land were urged to coordinate with the Secretariat to facilitate the rollout of the construction program.
In a bid to consolidate unity, Todwong announced that the party will embark on a nationwide reconciliation process after the inauguration to address internal differences that arose during the electoral period. “The strength of the NRM lies in unity and discipline,” he said. “We must move forward together as one family.”
Amb. Barbara Nekesa Oundo, the party’s National Treasurer, said a number of activities had been lined up ahead of the inauguration ceremony.
Nekesa thanked the district officials for the coherence in the campaigns that eventually led to the landslide victory at all levels.
“The just concluded campaigns that led to the NRM mass victory was largely party structure-led under the central coordination of the NRM Secretariat,” she said.
“This central command created cohesion as it got rid of many mobilization groups leading on different fronts and yet in the same field.”
The meeting was attended by members of the Party Central Executive Committee (CEC) and the Party Secretariat Top Management-NRM.
