Four bodies were retrieved from River Nkuse on the second day of search operations following a deadly boat accident that occurred on Tuesday evening.

The accident occurred after a canoe ferrying passengers from Bugoma Forest Reserve in Kikuube District to Kyaleni Cell, Pacwa Town Council in Kagadi District capsized.

The canoe is believed to have had more than 30 people on board. Most of them were said to be charcoal burners, farmers, and small-scale traders. Only about 10 people are reported to have survived. Authorities suspected overloading as the likely cause.Kirungi, Sulaiman, the Commissioner of Police and Commandant of the Uganda Police Marine Unit, said the search is still ongoing to recover more bodies.

He urged the public to follow water transport safety guidelines, especially wearing life jackets while traveling on water.

Kagadi Resident District Commissioner, Caroline Nashemeza, called on local leaders, particularly LC1 chairpersons, to keep proper records of residents to ease identification during emergencies.

On the first day of the search, marine divers from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces and Uganda Police Force were unable to retrieve any bodies despite extensive efforts.
