Police in Terego District are investigating the fatal shooting of a boda boda rider by unknown assailants. The deceased has been identified as Bill Yamindu, 21, a resident of Ora Village in Katrini Sub-county. He was shot dead on Tuesday at around 10:00 a.m. near Katrini Secondary School. Preliminary police findings indicate that the attackers posed as passengers before turning on the rider.

According to investigators, the suspects hired Yamindu from a boda boda stage at Ojipaku Trading Centre in Olua Village. Along the way, they allegedly asked him to divert from the main road after noticing people cultivating nearby. As the rider attempted to turn, one of the suspects—who was reportedly hooded—shot him from behind. The attackers fled with the victim’s motorcycle, whose registration details were still being established by police at the time of reporting.

West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson Josephine Angucia confirmed the incident and said one suspect has already been arrested to assist with investigations. “Police visited, examined, and documented the scene of the crime, and recorded statements from witnesses. One male suspect was arrested to assist police with investigations into the incident,” Angucia said. She appealed to the public to provide information that could help police arrest the remaining suspects and recover the firearm used in the attack.

“The longer this gun remains in the hands of the wrong elements, the more cases of gun violence will be registered in the communities. We appeal to the public to share any information that can lead to its recovery,” she added. Katrini Sub-county LCIII Chairperson Moses Mandebo described the killing as unfortunate and called for increased vigilance among boda boda riders and the wider community.

“This incident is deeply unfortunate. I urge all community members, especially boda boda riders, to remain alert and prioritize their safety,” Mandebo said. The killing comes amid continued concerns over violent crime involving firearms across the country. According to the 2025 Annual Police Crime Report, 190 murder-by-shooting cases were recorded in Uganda, compared to 188 cases in 2024, representing a 1.1 percent increase. Of the victims, 171 were adult males, 12 adult females, and seven were juveniles.
