Kalungu East Member of Parliament-elect Yusuf Junior Kiruuta, popularly known as Nkerettanyi, has been charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

The 29-year-old legislator, who defeated former Agriculture Minister Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja in the recently concluded elections, was on Friday arraigned before the Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa. He is accused of stealing curtains valued at 3.7 billion shillings, which have since been tendered in court as exhibits.

According to the prosecution, Kiruuta allegedly received and retained twelve rolls of curtain material at Eagle Plaza in Kampala’s Central Division between 2018 and January 2022, knowing or having reason to believe that the items had been stolen. The curtains are said to belong to businessman Hajji Sulaiman Lwabuuka Kisuule.

Kiruuta faces the charges alongside four other suspects: businessman John Tamale, a resident of Kiwanga Jomayi in Seeta, Mukono District; Ivan Zziwa of Namugongo Mbalwa; Hamza Mugumya, a shop attendant from Bulwadda Cell, Matuga in Wakiso District; and Shamirah Nakacwa Muliika, a housewife from Bweya, Kajjansi Town Council. Nakacwa is accused of having directly stolen the curtains, which were later allegedly received by her co-accused.

Court records indicate that the case dates back to December 2024. Nakacwa was the first suspect to be arrested, while the other accused persons remained at large until later developments in the investigations. The complainant told the court that Nakacwa, his wife, allegedly facilitated the theft by switching off CCTV cameras that would have captured the culprits.

Kiruuta denied all the charges, and so did his co-accused, and was subsequently released on bail. Hearing of the case has been scheduled for March 9, 2026.
