Newly elected leaders in Fort Portal Tourism City have pledged to prioritise cleanliness, physical planning, and infrastructure development as part of efforts to transform the city into a modern and well-organised urban centre during their 2026–2031 term of office.

Fort Portal City Mayor-elect, Reverend Willy Kintu Muhanga, said that under his leadership, the city will undergo visible change, beginning with restoring its reputation as the cleanest town in the country. Muhanga said beautification, proper waste management, and infrastructure development will be central to his administration. He added that his vision is to build a cosmopolitan city that welcomes everyone, supported by improved road networks, orderly developments, and a clean environment. Joram Bintamanya, the newly elected Mayor for Fort Portal Central Division, said his administration will strictly enforce cleanliness standards, improve garbage collection, and ensure order among traders operating in the city.Bintamanya noted that strengthened physical planning will be key in ensuring that all developments comply with the required city standards.

Ronald Muhenda, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Fort Portal Central Division, pledged to lobby for income-generating activities and self-employment programmes targeting the youth to enable them actively contribute to city development.

Muhenda also said the country’s education system requires reforms to equip learners with practical skills that can directly integrate them into the money economy, adding that health and education will remain priorities under his leadership.

Margaret Muhanga Mugisa, who was re-elected for a second term as Fort Portal North Division Member of Parliament, said she will lobby for more roads to be tarmacked in the constituency under the forthcoming phase of the Uganda Cities and Municipalities Infrastructure Development Programme (UCMID).Muhanga added that her focus will also include expanding street lighting, extending electricity to villages not connected to the national grid, and improving access to clean water. She said she will work with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation to extend services to underserved areas and establish public water points where household connections are unaffordable.

Fort Portal City Woman Member of Parliament, Irene Linda Mugisa, called on leaders to work together to ensure the city develops in a coordinated and organised manner. She pledged to follow up on the completion of Buhinga Stadium and the tarmacking of all roads within the city.Linda also said she will lobby for Fort Portal City to acquire its own road unit to improve road maintenance and construction, and advocate for better funding for government schools through enhanced teachers’ salaries and increased capitation grants.
