Residents in Dadas village in Akoboi Sub County of Katakwi District have identified inadequate water sources and flooding as hurdles that must be addressed quickly in an effort to address the difficulty to access clean water.
According to inhabitants, a lack of suitable water sources and road infrastructure due to floods cause them to suffer from water-borne diseases and incur excessive transportation costs.
Dadas village in Akoboi sub county, Katakwi district is among the largely populated villages with about 3,000 residents and is surrounded by Otur swamp. It depends on only two sources of borehole water which cann serve the population even if the all lined up to draw water nonstop the whole day.
Francis Otim, LCI chairperson Dadas village, says lack of boreholes in the area has caused residents to fall ill with water-borne diseases such as typhoid and diarrhea while malaria is also a big threat.
Otim says the biggest challenge is inadequate water sources, also noting that only two boreholes are serving a population of 3,000 people in the village.
According to Otim, Floods caused by torrential rains have wracked havoc in the village, leaving 211 gardens of cassava, sweet potatoes, sorghum, millet among affected and 83 latrines have collapsed due flooding.
Peter Akorimo, a resident of Okibui, decried the lack of borehole or piped water since water is a basic requirement for hygiene and sanitation.Sarah Asio, a resident of Dadas, added her voice to the call for government intervention for donating tarpaulines, latrine slabs and emergency food.
A common standard is that one borehole should serve approximately 300 people, though this can vary depending on the context and the specific needs of the community. For instance, some projects report serving anywhere from 100 to over 1,700 people with a single borehole, depending on factors like water demand, the number of taps, and whether it serves a school or a broader community.
