The Kitgum Chief Magistrate’s Court has sentenced two men to six months in jail for stealing a school pit latrine door.
Rogers Tampira and Jacob Tolit pleaded guilty to stealing a steel door worth 300,000 shillings from Lupur Primary School in Omiya Anyima Sub-county, Kitgum District, on August 9, 2025. The door was later recovered.
During the hearing, the duo pleaded for forgiveness and asked for a lighter sentence of community service, claiming to be first-time offenders. But Chief Magistrate Robert Ekirita ruled that theft is a serious crime that must be punished.
“The sentence should serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders that Uganda is not a haven for thieves,” Ekirita said. He acknowledged the guilty plea and recovery of the door but stressed that the law had to take its course, warning that the punishment should reinforce respect for public property, especially in schools.
